Licensing information for Queensland

There are different levels of licencing for keeping reptiles in Queensland. Most of the pythons, some geckoes, skinks, dragons and turtles are able to be kept on a recreational licence. All venomous snakes require a restricted licence. File snakes are included here, as are crocs and some of our more endangered turtle species. The EPA must be advised of "movement" of any reptile - buying and selling. Movement advice costs about $3. A recreational licence costs $55.60 for up to five years.

Keepers are allowed to breed reptiles, but not to hybridize them. A record book must be kept and be up to date. Wildlife officers are allowed to view this on request. They are also allowed to come to the premises where the animals are kept to inspect them. Licences are not transferrable.

A few of the easier to keep reptile species may also be purchased from pet stores, but the purchaser must have a licence prior to buying them at the store.
