Using a Reptile Aquarium for Fish

Reptile Aquarium for Fish

Fish tank management is important for anyone who owns a best fish tank filters for pet fish. After all, manufacturers and suppliers of fish and reptile structures group them under one category where they sell them as aquariums or as terrariums.

This makes it relatively easy for a fish keeper to convert a reptile cage into a fish aquarium. Nevertheless, the process of conversion should be perfectly done since slight mistakes can be disastrous. For example, if not properly sealed, all fish in the aquarium will die. To help you with that, here are some steps you can follow:

Assess the Tank

The first thing you should do is to assess the capacity of the tank. Ensure that the tank has enough capacity to hold the amount of water you want. Look for labels and check if they have stated whether the tank is terrarium, aquarium, or both. If you can’t see the label, inquire the manufacturer about it. Don’t use the tank if it’s labeled as dry habitat since you can’t put water in such tanks.

Empty the Content of the Tank

Remove the substrates in the tank, and make sure to also remove any rocks, gravels, plants, or anything in the tank and keep them properly to be reused. These items are important to maintain a balanced ecosystem in the aquarium as they keep a balanced microbe population, nutrients, as well as other important chemicals such as ammonia.

Clean the Tank

Next is to clean the terrarium. Avoid using normal detergents or soaps since they could contain toxic elements that can harm your fish. Use special cleaning products designed for washing aquariums.

You can also use vinegar or baking soda. Make sure that the corners and other hidden places of the tank are properly washed. After washing, rinse the tank properly using clean water.

Place on the Stand

Place your aquarium on a stand. The stand should be strong enough to support the weight of the water contained in the aquarium. You can also purchase a special stand designed for aquariums. Keep in mind that normal house tables can’t withstand the weight of most fish tanks, so it’s better to avoid using them.

Add Water and Decorations

Add the decorations and ornaments such as gravel, plants, and stones. After that, you can now fill your tank with water. If you are using chlorinated water, don’t forget to add a dechlorinator to remove the chlorine that could be harmful to your fish.

Add a Filter

Add your filter that corresponds to the capacity of your tank. If you intend to keep tropical fish, install a heater to provide the necessary temperature.

Once it’s done, make sure to test your aquarium water daily. You can use commercially purchased ammonia and nitrate strips. The two compounds could be present in reptile tanks due to their urine, but they are harmful to the fish. If they are present, change half of the water daily until they can no longer be detected.

Fish tank management is an aspect that should be understood by every person who intends to keep fish. One of these aspects includes knowing how to convert a reptile aquarium for fish use. By following the above steps, you will be able to perform the process with ease.
